How to Prep for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season in the Carolinas runs from June to November, but September is the peak time for hurricanes and tropical storms in our area. There’s a lot to be done to prep your home for a hurricane- here’s a few tips we have to help keep you safe.
- Create a Basic Supplies Kit
The National Hurricane Center has compiled a list of basic supplies to help keep you safe and comfortable in the event of a hurricane.
-Food- at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
-Water-one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
-Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
-First aid kit
-Whistle to signal for help
-Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
-Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
-Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
-Manual can opener for food
-Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
Additional supplies you should consider stocking up on: prescription and non-prescription medication, cash, baby and pet supplies, sleeping bags and blankets, fire extinguisher, matches, and personal hygiene items.
- Make a Plan
Plan ahead in the event of an emergency by considering these four questions:
- How will I receive emergency alerts?
- What is my shelter plan?
- Where will I go if I need to evacuate?
- What is my family communication plan?
